World Book Day 2024

Namao School will be celebrating World Book Day on Wednesday April 24, 2024!

World Book Day was created by UNESCO on the April 23, 1995 as a worldwide celebration of books and reading. World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries around the globe. The first World Book Day in the UK and Ireland took place in 1997 to encourage young people to discover the pleasure of reading.

Students in all grades are invited to dress up as their favorite book character when they come to school that day. All students are also invited to participate in our annual potato book character contest - see below for details! It will be a fun day to celebrate the immense importance of books!

Namao’s Annual Potato Book Character Contest Rules

As part of our World Book Day celebration, participants are invited to show their love of reading in a creative way.  The challenge is to create a scene and character from a favorite book, but this is not your ordinary contest!  The guidelines are as follows:

  • Your character must be a decorated potato. Your character can be from a nursery rhyme, fairy tale, picture book or chapter book.
  •  Your character should be placed in a significant setting from the book.  This may be a shoebox diorama, a decorated backdrop or any small container in which you can represent the setting.  Consider using items from your recycle bin!
  • Your potato character can be standing or laying down.
  • Please include the title of your book, the name of the character, your name and your homeroom.
  • Turn in your potatoes to the library on Monday, April 22nd or Tuesday, April 23rd.

A panel of judges will vote for the top two entries in each division on Wednesday, April 23rd and the winners will be announced that afternoon!

Happy Reading!
