BYOD Implementation for Grade 5 – Coming in October 2017
As you are aware, Namao School has been utilizing the “Bring your own device” for our Grade 5 and 6 students this past school year. Students currently in Grade 5 and 6 will use their devices in Grades 6 and 7 next year.
Feedback from students, parents and staff has been very positive. The infrastructure to support many devices online has been available at our school for a few years now. Currently, many students already bring their own evice to school for educational and personal purposes, whether it be a Chromebook, computer, IPod, tablet, phone etc. We are recommending that all current Grade 4 students bring a device to school for educational purposes for the next school year, when they are in Grade 5. Students would be responsible for the care and maintenance of their own device and could use it at home and at school.
At school we would promote the effective, ethical and educational use of technology with our students. This means that students would bring their own personal devices to school as part of their educational supplies and will be listed under the appropriate grades school supplies (Gr. 5, 6 and 7).
This exciting opportunity does not come without some obstacles. Together we would be responsible to educate students on the proper use of the device, the educational opportunities, internet safety, responsible use, care and maintenance.
We understand that families are always having to plan ahead and save. In consideration of this, we want you to take advantage of the time to start putting money away, purchase for birthdays or other special events in anticipation of an October 2017 start. Teachers would take the month of September to establish classroom rules and routines prior to introducing the Chromebooks in October.
· When considering purchasing a device for school, that you consider a Chromebook. This is the most cost effective option to meet your child’s educational needs while at Namao School.
· The BYOD would be in all Grades from 5 to 9 eventually, hence your child will use the computer for the remainder of their educational experience at Namao School.
· Safety and protection of the device is never guaranteed, so your child would be responsible to secure the device in a locked locker or in the charging space in the classroom. Damage and loss prevention protection would be the responsibility of the family.
· For those who cannot afford a computer, we would have a few loaners available that could be signed out.
At Parent Teacher Interviews in March, you will have an opportunity to provide feedback to teachers and/or to ask questions with Mr. Harnish or Mrs. Chabot about this exciting opportunity.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Harnish at the school at 780-973-9191.
